What Pixel Pitch Do I Need? LED Wall Viewing Distance Guide

By Trianze Tech Team

Planning an LED wall and unsure which pixel pitch to choose? Request a site survey or WhatsApp our AV consultants and we will recommend the right wall for your room.

Pick the pixel pitch from the closest viewing distance. A simple rule of thumb: the closest comfortable distance in metres is about the same number as the pixel pitch in millimetres, and the image looks best from about two to three times that distance. So a 1.5 mm LED wall looks smooth from about 1.5 metres and best from 3 to 4.5 metres, while a 2.5 mm wall suits rooms where the nearest viewer sits 5 metres or more away. Control rooms and close-view boardrooms use 0.78 to 1.2 mm, most boardrooms and lobbies use 1.2 to 1.8 mm, and auditoriums and atriums use 2 to 2.5 mm.

What Pixel Pitch Means

Pixel pitch is the distance between the centres of two neighbouring LED pixels, in millimetres. A smaller pitch packs more pixels into the same area, so the image stays smooth when people stand closer. Stand too close to a coarse pitch and you see individual dots; stand far away and the dots blend into a smooth picture, which is why the right pitch depends on the room, not on the brochure.

Pixel pitch Closest comfortable distance Best viewing distance Examples in our range Typical rooms
0.78 mm about 0.8 m 1.6 to 2.4 m LG MAGNIT LMPB007BANA Control rooms, close-view boardrooms
0.84 mm about 0.8 m 1.7 to 2.5 m Samsung The Wall P0.84, Samsung P0.84 146 inch Executive boardrooms, briefing centres
0.93 to 0.94 mm about 0.9 m 1.9 to 2.8 m ViewSonic LDP163-091, LG MAGNIT LMPB009BANA 4K boardrooms, control rooms
1.2 to 1.25 mm about 1.2 m 2.4 to 3.8 m Samsung The Wall P1.2, LG MAGNIT Pro LSAP012, MAXHUB LX220V18 Boardrooms, auditoriums, lobbies
1.5 to 1.68 mm about 1.5 m 3 to 5 m Samsung IF015H, Samsung P1.5 130 inch, Samsung P1.68 146 inch, ViewSonic LDP135-151 Boardrooms, training rooms, lobbies
1.7 to 2.0 mm about 2 m 3.5 to 6 m MAXHUB LX150V07, ViewSonic LDP163-181, MAXHUB LX180V07 Large meeting rooms, town halls
2.5 mm about 2.5 m 5 to 7.5 m ViewSonic LDP216-251, MAXHUB LX220V07 Auditoriums, atriums, event spaces

The distances are rules of thumb for typical video and presentation content. Small text, spreadsheets and dashboards need you to sit a little farther back, or choose a finer pitch. See all models in our LED cabinet collection and all-in-one LED displays.

How Pixel Pitch Sets the Resolution

The resolution of an LED wall is the width divided by the pixel pitch. Three examples from our range show how this works:

If your content is 4K and people sit close, check that the wall size and pitch together reach 3,840 pixels across. If the content is Full HD or the audience sits far away, a coarser pitch is enough.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Pixel Pitch

  • Choosing from the back row: size the pitch from the front row or the operator desk, the closest point anyone looks from.
  • Paying for pitch nobody can see: in a large hall, a 1.2 mm wall looks the same as 2.5 mm from 8 metres away.
  • Ignoring brightness: a lobby facing glass needs more brightness, such as the 1,000 nit LG MAGNIT Pro LSAP012 or the 800 nit Samsung IF015H.
  • Forgetting the content: dashboards and small text need a finer pitch than video and logos.

Getting the Pitch Right in a UAE Project

Trianze Tech measures the room, the closest and farthest viewing points, the daylight and the content you will show, then recommends the pixel pitch, wall size and controller with a layout drawing. We install LED walls in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and across the UAE and support them after handover. See our LED video wall solutions.

Frequently asked questions

What does pixel pitch mean on an LED wall?

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres from the centre of one LED pixel to the next. A smaller number means the pixels are closer together, the image looks smoother from close up and the wall has more pixels for the same size.

What viewing distance is right for a 1.5 mm pixel pitch?

As a rule of thumb, viewers should be at least about 1.5 metres away from a 1.5 mm wall, and the image looks best from about 3 to 4.5 metres. This suits most boardrooms and lobbies. The Samsung IF015H cabinet and the Samsung P1.5 130 inch all-in-one display both use a 1.5 mm pitch.

How do I work out the resolution of an LED wall?

Divide the wall width in millimetres by the pixel pitch. A wall 4,000 mm wide at 1.5 mm pitch is about 2,667 pixels across. To reach 4K (3,840 pixels across), divide the width by 3,840: a wall about 3.6 metres wide needs roughly 0.94 mm, which is why the 163 inch ViewSonic LDP163-091 uses 0.93 mm for native 4K.

Is a finer pixel pitch always better?

No. A finer pitch only helps if people stand close enough to see the difference. In a large auditorium where the nearest seat is 6 metres away, a 2.5 mm wall looks just as smooth as a 1.2 mm wall, and the finer pitch would add cost without a visible benefit. Choose the pitch from the closest viewing distance.

What pixel pitch do I need for a control room?

Operators usually sit 1 to 3 metres from the wall and read small text, so control rooms use fine pitch LED of about 0.78 to 1.2 mm, such as LG MAGNIT 0.78 mm or 0.94 mm, or narrow bezel LCD panels.

Can Trianze Tech help me choose the right pixel pitch in the UAE?

Yes. Trianze Tech measures the room, the closest and farthest viewing positions and the content you will show, then recommends the pixel pitch and wall size with a layout drawing. We install LED walls across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Call +971 58 161 3661 or message us on WhatsApp.
