Interactive Flat Panel vs Projector: Which Is Better for Classrooms and Meeting Rooms?

By Trianze Tech Team

Choosing between an interactive panel and a projector? Book a site survey or WhatsApp our AV consultants and we will recommend the right option for your room.

For most classrooms and meeting rooms, an interactive flat panel is the better choice: it stays bright with the lights on, has no lamp to replace and lets several people write at once. A projector is the better choice when you need a much larger image than a panel can give, such as in a lecture hall, auditorium or training hall, or when the image must be bigger than about 100 inches.

Side by Side

Factor Interactive flat panel Projector
Image size in our range 55 to 98 inches, plus 105 inch ultrawide From about 87 inches to very large screens
Brightness Self-lit, typically 350 to 450 nits 1,000 to 9,000 ANSI lumens; loses contrast in bright rooms
Touch 20 to 50 touch points Pen based on interactive models
Light source life Clevertouch Pro Series 3: at least 50,000 hours Lamp: 3,000 to 7,000 hours (BenQ MH856UST); laser: 20,000 hours (BenQ LU935ST)
Shadows None Reduced with ultra short throw lenses
Installation Wall mount or mobile stand Ceiling or wall mount, screen, cabling to the projector

Why Panels Have Replaced Projectors in Most Classrooms

A panel such as the BenQ RP7505 (450 nits, 50 touch points) or Clevertouch Pro Series 3 (50 touch points) is readable in a bright UAE classroom without closing the blinds. There is no lamp to change, no projector to align, and students can write on the board together. Many panels also run apps, whiteboarding and screen sharing without a PC. When a Projector Still Makes Sense

  • Very large images: lecture halls and auditoriums where the image must be far bigger than 98 inches. Screens such as the Da-Lite 14082EF reach a 298 inch viewable diagonal.
  • Bright, large venues: a laser projector such as the BenQ LU935ST gives 5,500 lumens with a 20,000 hour light source.
  • Existing installations: rooms already wired for a projector and screen can be upgraded with a new projector.

Interactive Projectors

An interactive projector such as the BenQ MW860USTi (3,000 lumens, 0.37 throw ratio, PointDraw with dual pens) turns a wall or whiteboard into a writing surface and projects an 87 inch image from 0.73 metres. Ultra short throw models such as the BenQ MH856UST (100 inch image from about 0.77 metres) reduce shadows from people standing at the board.

Maintenance Over the Years

Lamp projectors need periodic lamp replacement, for example 3,000 hours in normal mode on the BenQ MH856UST. Laser projectors and panels avoid this, which matters for schools with many rooms. See our projectors and screens and interactive flat panels.

Frequently asked questions

Is an interactive flat panel better than a projector for a classroom?

For most classrooms, yes. An interactive flat panel stays bright in daylight, has no lamp to replace, and lets several students write on it at once. A projector is still a good choice when you need a much larger image, for example in a lecture hall or auditorium.

Can a projector be interactive?

Yes. Interactive projectors such as the BenQ MW860USTi use pens to write on the projected image (PointDraw with dual pen support). Interactive flat panels usually support many more simultaneous touch points, from 20 to 50 in our range.

Do projectors need lamp replacements?

Lamp projectors do. For example, the BenQ MH856UST lists a lamp life of 3,000 hours in normal mode and 7,000 hours in eco mode. Laser projectors such as the BenQ LU935ST list a 20,000 hour light source life, and an interactive panel such as the Clevertouch Pro Series 3 lists a screen life of at least 50,000 hours.

What size image can a projector give compared with a panel?

Interactive panels in our range go up to 98 inches, plus a 105 inch ultrawide LG CreateBoard. A projector with a suitable screen can be much larger; for example, the Da-Lite Tensioned Advantage 14082EF screen has a 298 inch viewable diagonal.

Do I need to darken the room for a projector?

It helps. Projectors lose contrast in bright rooms, so classrooms with daylight often need blinds or a brighter projector. Interactive panels are self-lit, with 350 to 450 nits typical in our range, and stay readable with the lights on.
