How Bright Should Digital Signage Be? Nits Guide for Indoor, Window and Outdoor Screens

By Trianze Tech Team

Not sure how bright your screen should be? Book a site survey or WhatsApp our AV consultants and we will recommend the right brightness level for your room.

Match brightness to the light around the screen. As a guide from the displays we supply: 350 to 500 nits for offices, meeting rooms and corridors; 700 to 800 nits for bright receptions, malls and atriums with daylight; 2,500 to 4,000 nits for window-facing screens that face the street; and 3,000 to 4,000 nits with a sealed design for outdoor screens in direct sun.

Brightness by Location

Location Recommended brightness Example models we supply
Meeting room, office, corridor 350 to 500 nits Samsung QB75B (350), LG 55UM5N-H (500), Sony FW-55BZ35P (500)
Bright reception, mall, atrium 700 to 800 nits Samsung QH55C (700), LG 75UH7N-M (700), BenQ SH6504 (800)
Shop window facing the street 2,500 to 4,000 nits LG 49XS2E-B (2,500), Samsung OM32DX (3,000), LG 55XS4P (4,000)
Outdoor, direct sun 3,000 to 4,000 nits Samsung OH55DX (3,000), Samsung OH75A (3,500), LG 55XE4F-M (4,000)

Indoor Screens: 350 to 500 Nits

Most offices and meeting rooms have controlled lighting, so 350 to 500 nits is comfortable to watch from a few metres. The Samsung QB75B is a 350 nit 75 inch 4K display rated for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, and the LG 55UM5N-H is 500 nits. Higher brightness here often makes the screen harder to look at.

Bright Interiors: 700 to 800 Nits

Lobbies with glass facades, malls and atriums get strong daylight during the day. A 700 nit screen such as the Samsung QH55C or LG 75UH7N-M stays readable, and the BenQ SH6504 goes to 800 nits. Video walls in bright lobbies use the same logic; see our LED vs LCD video wall guide.

Window-Facing Screens: 2,500 to 4,000 Nits

A screen behind a shop window faces the street and the sun. Window-facing models are built for this, such as the LG 49XS2E-B at 2,500 nits, the Samsung OM32DX at 3,000 nits and the LG 55XS4P, LG 75XS4P and Samsung OM46B at 4,000 nits.

Outdoor Screens: 3,000 to 4,000 Nits

Outdoor screens need both brightness and protection from dust, heat and rain. Our range includes the Samsung OH55DX (3,000 nits), the Samsung OH75A (3,500 nits) and the LG 55XE4F-M (4,000 nits). Plan the mounting, power and cooling space with the installer.

Other Things That Affect Readability

  • Haze and anti-glare: high haze panels such as the LG 65UH5J reduce reflections from lights and windows.
  • Viewing angle: place screens where people look at them face on, not at a steep angle.
  • Content: high contrast text and colours stay readable in brighter spaces.
  • Operating hours: choose a 24/7 rated display if the screen runs all day.

Frequently asked questions

How many nits do I need for indoor digital signage?

For offices, meeting rooms and corridors with normal lighting, 350 to 500 nits is usually enough. For bright receptions, malls and atriums with daylight, choose 700 to 800 nits. In our range, the Samsung QB75B is 350 nits, the LG UM5N series is 500 nits, the Samsung QH55C is 700 nits and the BenQ SH series is 800 nits.

How bright should a window-facing display be?

A screen facing the street through a shop window competes with direct sunlight, so window-facing models are much brighter. In our range they reach 2,500 nits (LG 49XS2E-B) to 4,000 nits (LG 55XS4P and 75XS4P, Samsung OM46B).

How bright should an outdoor display be in the UAE?

Outdoor screens in direct sun need about 3,000 to 4,000 nits and a sealed, weather-protected design. In our range, the Samsung OH55DX is 3,000 nits, the Samsung OH75A is 3,500 nits and the LG 55XE4F-M is 4,000 nits.

Is brighter always better for signage?

No. A screen that is too bright for an indoor space can be uncomfortable to look at and uses more power. Match the brightness to the light level where the screen sits, and use displays with automatic brightness control where available.

What is the difference between nits and lumens?

Nits measure how bright a display screen is. Lumens measure the light output of a projector. A signage display is rated in nits; a projector used for signage or presentations is rated in ANSI lumens.
