How to Choose a Home Theater Projector: Brightness, 4K, Contrast and Lens

By Trianze Tech Team

Choosing a projector for a home cinema? Book a room survey or WhatsApp our AV consultants and we will check your room against the right models.

Projector spec sheets are full of numbers. A handful decide how the picture looks in your room. This guide explains each one in plain language, so you can compare models fairly. It supports our home theater solutions page.

The Specs That Matter

Spec What it means What to look for
Brightness (ANSI lumens) How much light reaches the screen Dark cinema rooms need less. Bright living rooms need more
Resolution Sharpness of the picture 4K for large screens. 1080p can suit smaller screens
Contrast and HDR Depth of blacks and highlights HDR support and good native contrast for dark rooms
Lens and throw ratio How far the projector sits from the screen Match throw ratio to your room length. Lens shift helps placement
Light source Laser or lamp Laser lasts longer. See our laser vs lamp guide

Brightness: Match It to the Room

In a dark, dedicated cinema a modest lumen figure is enough, because there is no competing light. In a living room with daylight, you need far more. Examples from our range: the Epson EH-LS12000B is listed at 2,700 lumens for dark rooms, the Epson EH-TW7100 at 3,000 lumens, and the Epson EH-LS800B at 4,000 lumens for brighter rooms.

4K and Why Screen Size Matters

The bigger the screen, the more resolution you notice. For a 100 inch screen or larger, 4K gives a clearly sharper picture. See our 4K and UHD projectors.

Lens Options

Motorized lens shift lets you position the image from your seat without moving the projector, and lens memory recalls saved settings for different screen formats. The Epson EH-LS12000B has motorized vertical and horizontal lens shift with 10 lens position memories, and the Epson EH-QL series adds interchangeable lenses, which helps in rooms where the projector cannot sit at the ideal distance. Do Not Forget the Screen and Mount

A great projector needs a good surface. We supply VSYS 16:9 screens, including the VSPS120-M motorized screen and the PEGA120 fixed frame screen, and the VSYS VPM-2G ceiling mount. Read how to size the screen in our screen size guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many lumens do I need for a home theater?

It depends on room light and screen size. A dark cinema room works with a lower figure, while a living room with daylight needs a much brighter projector. We confirm the number on a room survey.

Is 4K worth it for a projector?

For a large screen and modern films, sport and games, yes. 4K shows more detail on a big picture. On a small screen a good 1080p model can still be enough.

What is throw ratio?

Throw ratio is the distance from the projector to the screen divided by the picture width. A lower ratio means the projector can sit closer to the screen.
