Projector Screen Size and Viewing Distance: How to Pick the Right Screen
By Trianze Tech TeamShare
Choosing a screen? Book a room survey or WhatsApp our AV consultants and we will size the screen to your seating.
The screen is half of a projection system. Too small and the room feels cramped. Too large and viewers tire their eyes. The simplest method is to start from the distance between the main seat and the screen.
16:9 Screen Size and Viewing Distance
For a 16:9 screen, the picture width is about 0.87 times the diagonal. A common planning range puts the main seat between about 1.4 and 1.9 times the picture width from the screen. This is a guideline, and we confirm it against your room.
| Screen diagonal | Picture width | Main seat distance (guide) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 inch | about 2.2 m | about 3.0 to 4.1 m |
| 120 inch | about 2.7 m | about 3.6 to 5.0 m |
| 135 inch | about 3.0 m | about 4.1 to 5.6 m |
| 150 inch | about 3.3 m | about 4.6 to 6.2 m |
Fixed Frame or Motorized?
A fixed frame screen keeps the surface flat and always ready, and is the best pairing for ultra short throw projectors. A motorized screen drops from the ceiling when needed and hides away when the room is used for other things. Our VSYS 16:9 range includes the PEGA120 fixed frame screen, the VSPS100-M and the VSPS120-M motorized screens. Browse all projection screens.
Mounting the Projector
A ceiling projector needs a solid mount. The VSYS VPM-2G universal ceiling mount fits a wide range of projectors. See projector mounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What screen size is best for a 4K projector?
4K projectors suit larger screens, because the extra detail is visible on a big picture. Choose the size from your seating distance using the table above.
What aspect ratio should I choose?
16:9 matches most TV, streaming and games. Wide cinema ratios need a wider screen or letterboxing. Our VSYS screens are 16:9.
Can I use a white wall instead of a screen?
You can, but a screen gives a flatter, more uniform surface and better results in rooms with some light.
